Season 1

The series focuses on the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, that is charged with supernatural history. It follows Elena Gilbert portrayed by Nina Dobrev as she begins to get over her parents’ death, when two vampires pull her into a world she didn’t know before, Stefan and Damon Salvatore, portrayed by Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, respectively. Kayla Ewell portrayed Vicki Donovan for the first seven episodes until her character was killed off. Matt Davis was later cast as a history teacher in a recurring role to fill the void. He was later upgraded to series regular status.[4] The season concluded on May 13, 2010, and consisted of 22 episodes.

Season 2

The second season focuses on the return of Elena Gilbert’s (Nina Dobrev) doppelgänger, Katherine Pierce, the introduction of werewolves, the sun and moon curse, and the arrival of the original vampires. Tyler Lockwood’s (Michael Trevino) uncle, Mason Lockwood (Taylor Kinney), arrives in town searching for the moonstone, a family heirloom. Tyler later learns of his family’s werewolf curse. Meanwhile, Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) is killed by Katherine while having Damon Salvatore’s (Ian Somerhalder) blood in her system, turning her into a vampire. The arrival of the original vampires, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan), also bring about complications. Klaus is a vampire-werewolf hybrid, but his werewolf side had been forced into dormancy by witches, as nature would not stand for such an imbalance in power. Therefore, Klaus arrives in town with plans to break the curse and unleash his werewolf side by channelling the power of the full moon into the moonstone, sacrificing a vampire and a werewolf, and drinking the blood of the doppelgänger.

Story continues in next season

Season 3

The third season consisted of 22 episodes and focused on the story of Klaus‘ origin, his relation with his family and reveal more about the original family. The third season opened to generally positive reviews. The season takes a gap from the last season and begins with Elena Gilbert‘s 18th birthday with all series regulars returning with the exception of Sara Canning whose character Jenna Sommers was killed off in the previous season. Joseph Morgan‘s character Klaus became a series regular instead of returning as a recurring character.

Elena and Alaric head to Tennessee and are followed by Damon. Klaus continues to try to create hybrids but fails when the hybrids end up bleeding to death or went crazy and Klaus had to kill them himself. Apparently so because Elena is still alive. Stefan meets up with Damon and tells him to protect Elena. Damon tells Elena that he is wrong about his brother and that Stefan can still be saved. Matt tries to connect with Vicki’s ghost through Jeremy. Tyler realises his mother had captured Caroline, who is still being held captive. Tyler then shows his mother he is a werewolf as it was a full moon that night, showing that he was also a monster. Bill, Caroline’s dad goes to see Caroline.

Season 4

In the fourth season premiere, Elena awakens after the accident to find the thing she dreaded most has come true. Damon is furious with Stefan, and takes out his rage on Matt.

Alaric having informed the founders council, the mayoress and sheriff are deposed, and zealot pastor Young takes charges of a ruthless hunt for vampires and werewolves. Klaus makes out with Caroline as Tyler, who soon realizes their body switch but is sworn to secrecy. Because Elena made Stefan rescue Matt from drowning first, she can only be kept alive by vampire blood, yet she refuses to turn completely. Damon grimly accepts having to leave her to his brother again. Klaus orders Bonnie to break the spell and scorns Rebekah. The pastor’s posse lays siege to the founders’ houses and captures the gathered vampires and friends. Only Damon was outside, and must rescue them from vervain, or worse.

The pastor’s daughter, and old friend of the Gilberts, April Young, returns to town following her father’s death. Meanwhile, a vampire hunter, Connor Jordon, is investigating the supernatural population of Mystic Falls under the ruse of investigating the explosion that killed the Council. Using gloves made of vervain, Connor discovers Tyler is a vampire and immediately shoots him, but Tyler escapes. Jeremy meets Connor at the Mystic Grill and notices a tattoo only he can see. Despite Stefan’s best efforts, Elena is having trouble keeping animal blood down, and turns to Damon for help.
